Print is back?

Wondered if printed brochures and flyers still work? Or why companies still spend serious money on printed full color catalogs each year. Why does anyone still send printed newsletters when you can send an online version?

This contradicts what we hear in the media all the time that flyers, mailers, newsletters-all printed pieces used for marketing is either already dead or dying.  According to news reports we will soon be living in a completely digital world where we order everything from souk.com, never needing to step out of our house to purchase anything ever again.

Obviously, all the media reports are exaggerating it quite a bit.  Despite the shift towards digital, companies still print hundreds of thousands of print advertising materials like flyers, brochures,  catalogs every year and continue to have growth in sales. So obviously printed materials do work.  It’s not all digital.  Not yet.

So why do printed sales materials work?

Well, in today’s digital world getting someone’s attention is the most valuable commodity.  The more time a client spends time with your marketing tools or salesperson, the more likely she will buy from your company or refer someone to your business.  A strategically designed newsletter or catalog allows customers and prospects to spend time with your brand and your products and services.

The lifespan of an email is 11.1 seconds, compared to an average of 28 minutes a person may spend reading physical printed mail (newsletter, catalog or brochure).   With printed materials, you can sell one to one and there will fewer distractions for your prospect or client compared to reading the content online.

Printed materials not only grab your prospect’s attention, but also lays the foundation of trust.  When this relationship is nurtured and patiently promoted, this hard earned trust can lead to more referrals, reduced customer churn and higher customer lifetime value.  Customers buy only when they are ready to buy and not when you are ready to sell.  So having a sustained relationship with your prospect and client will make sure that you and your product comes first to his mind whenever he is ready to buy.

The ideal strategy should include a mix of both digital and Print marketing.  A printed newsletter, direct mail, a bit of Google Adwords ads and e-mail marketing  will together let you drive your online leads offline and offline leads online.  Having a presence in the online and offline world helps you grow your business and your bottom line.
