How to apply Self Adhesive Vinyl prints

Vinyl stickers are an attractive, recognizable and durable way of marketing which is highly effective both indoors and on the outside.  Self-adhesive window graphics be it posters, or specially cut vinyl graphics are one of the most popular forms of advertising due to its effectiveness.

Now if you had to apply vinyl stickers yourself, you may worry that it is a bit tricky to apply.   No need to sweat though, as, with the right materials and tools, a little preparation and a lot of heart, you will be able to affix your vinyl graphics smoothly and with minimal hassles.

So how do you start?

A well-prepared approach is halfway to success.  So first ensure that you have the following tools:

• A methylated spirit solution to clean the surface (only if it is really dirty)
• A damp cloth
• A spray bottle with a mixture of water and a small quantity of washing up liquid
• A squeegee or even an old credit card will do or a nice small even piece of plastic like a credit card
• A scalpel, craft knife or needle

Now assuming you have assembled all the tools you need with your vinyl stickers or posters, you start cleaning the surface onto which your vinyl will go.  If it is quite dirty use the methylated spirit solution or if the surface is clean just use the damp cloth.  Once the surface is clean you are now ready to actually fix your vinyl.

For up to A2 size of self-adhesive vinyl posters or stickers :

1. First peel out a small part of the vinyl from the backing, using the edge of a knife if required.
2. Gently apply the edge of the exposed vinyl after lining it up against the surface. Slowly rub the edge down with your squeeze or plastic credit card.
3. Now peel away more of the vinyl slowly, while pressing it on to the clean surface as you go from top to bottom or side to side.  The reason you apply it slowly is to identify any air bubbles formed and squeezing the air bubbles out towards the open ends using the squeeze.
4. Continue with this method until the entire vinyl graphic is applied onto the surface. Look out for tiny bubbles which may inevitably be formed and use the needle to pierce these, before rubbing it down gently with the squeeze.

 For vinyl that is big in size :

1. Ensure that the surface is clean.
2. Ideally two persons should work together in applying large vinyl, one to slowly peel away the backing and the other to apply the self-adhesive side of the vinyl.
3. First Spray the water solution on the surface.
4. This will enable you to move or even reposition the vinyl if there was an error during the application.
5. Use the same method as above, slowly peeling the backing bit by bit as the vinyl is applied on the surface while rubbing the vinyl down with the squeeze and removing the bubbles.
6. This method may take up to 48 hours for the adhesive to fully stick and it will be a good idea to check once or twice say every 24 hours or so and remove bubbles and reapply in certain areas where the application is not completely perfect.
